Entrance to the Chapel — Vailankanni Shrine, New Delhi

The entrance to the chapel is through wooden doors beneath a golden crucifix, and small golden bell, all within in a double pointed-arch framing reminiscent of the Mughal architecture seen throughout Delhi.

It is a dark contrast to the bright outdoors once inside the low, metal-ceiling building lit by a few fluorescent bulbs – and one is greeted by peacefulness; and recommendations for quiet with blue plastic signs of “Silence Please” and “Switch Off Mobile Phones”.  The shrine chapel walls and floors are made of white marble which keeps it very cool even in the hottest summer temperatures of New Delhi.  As the eyes adjust to the dimness, one begins to see the many beautiful images on the side walls, pillars and altar wall of the shrine.
